Book of the Year Awards

ForeWord Magazine’s Book of the Year Awards was established to increase attention to the outstanding literary achievements of independent publishers and their authors. ForeWord’s authority in this area is unique, as we focus exclusively on the small, independent, and university presses, as well as self-published books, eBooks, and PODs.

ForeWord’s Book of the Year Awards accepts works from independent, university presses, and the self-published. Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards are given to winners in 60 categories, plus two cash prizes of $1,500 each for Editor’s Choice in Fiction and Nonfiction. For the 2006 awards, more than 1,400 entries were received and 216 winners named. The Gold, Silver, and Bronze winners for each category, selected by US librarians and booksellers, are announced annually during a ceremony at BookExpo America.

Advertising Information

We know that the most thought-provoking and original books being published today can be found on the lists of independent presses like yours. Our loyal readership of 15,000+ industry professionals (librarians, booksellers, and agents) depends on us for the juice to keep their shelves fresh.

In a recent reader survey, ForeWord learned that sixty percent of our subscribers have read all of the last four issues. We also learned that subscribers spend an average of 30-60 minutes reading each new issue of the magazine, and that they save it as a reference.

Also, seventy-seven percent of ForeWord subscribers purchased or ordered a book as a result of seeing it reviewed or noted in the editorial. Almost half purchased a book, and another forty percent recommended the title or filed the page for future reference as a result of an ad.

Clarion review for fee service

If you are experiencing trouble getting your titles reviewed through traditional outlets, please consider Clarion, the original fee-for-review service offered through ForeWord. The process can take as little as two weeks, and if you are satisfied with the review you can begin to use it immediately in your marketing efforts. Also, with your permission, the review will be posted online and archived with the top three title information databases used by booksellers and librarians who make purchasing decisions: Bowker’s Books-In-Print online, Baker & Taylor’s Titlesource 3, and Ingram’s iPage. Of course, we always urge you to submit your title(s) through traditional “free” review sources first, including ForeWord Magazine.

International Trade Show Representation

International rights shows are an important link to the world market for your titles. There is a huge business opportunity in foreign rights sales and distribution beyond the shores of North America, and it’s important to be involved.

ForeWord Magazine is one of several companies who try to make the financial obstacles of small presses easier to bear by offering cooperative spaces. Cooperative stands in London, Bologna, Beijing, and Frankfurt, are all offered and operated by ForeWord, as well as domestically at BookExpo America. Using our international brand identity and nearly a decade of experience and contacts that have helped introduce many publishers to the foreign rights marketplace, we rent and manage the stand that showcases your titles.

Blogs

Add our Publishing Insider blog to your RSS feed. Unique and cutting-edge commentary related to all things publishing.

Author Pages

In January 2008, we launched ForeWord Author Pages, which features pages by and about authors whose books have been reviewed on the pages of our print magazine. Each issue, we invite authors of books we have chosen to review to respond to a series of questions. We post their responses online. Check back regularly as we add more authors.

Free Seasonal Announcements

ForeWord online features a listing by category of new titles from independent presses. Spring and Fall announcements are used as a reference by the librarians, booksellers, and agents who use ForeWord as their primary source of information about independent presses. The list is updated weekly and will consist of a PDF file linked from the ForeWordMagazine.com home page.

ForeWord This Week

ForeWord’s electronic newsletter tracks independent publishing news, and features interviews with authors and industry insiders, trade show round-ups, and awards and events.

Editorial calendar and submission guidelines

In each issue of the magazine, there are three to four feature ForeSight articles focusing on trends in popular categories. These, in addition to the seventy-five or more critical reviews of forthcoming titles from independent presses in our Review section.

While we try very hard to communicate with publicity departments concerning calls for submissions to the ForeSight features, we also hope that publishers will keep these forms handy to track what’s happening at ForeWord.

Click here for a copy of our review submission guidelines or view the editorial calendar for the coming year.

galleys2grab

Use our Online Registration Form to add your titles to our galleys2grab program for trade shows and notification of category features. To register, you must supply your booth number at the BEA show in Los Angeles. There is no charge for the galley2grab service.

Special Sections

Over the course of the year, we’ve discovered that certain perennial interest areas, as well as emerging trends in the publishing world, deserve additional coverage. ForeWord’s special sections and supplements exist to cover these topics and ideas more thoroughly.

Currently, we highlight graphic novels in Comique, digital technology in eWord, books for a global society in Polis, religion titles in Faith, and mind/body books in Spirit.

We are also looking forward to introducing ForeWorld, a special, stand-alone section to promote the culture of guest countries in terms of both literature and the publishing community.

Each of these sections first appears in the magazine, and then is overrun for long-term distribution at trade shows. View recent special sections and ad sales sheets here.

Other

Stay tuned for new Web 2.0 initiatives over the course of the next few months. We hope to provide a community for authors and publishers of all sizes, involving the ability to create individual pages on our site, interact with fellow creativity-makers, and more.
